Will the March Sunshine Provide any Vitamin D?

As we enjoy this warmer weather many of us are thinking that a few minutes in the sunshine may boost our vitamin D levels. Dr Mercola has produced this very helpful video using the United States Naval Observatory to help us know how much vitamin D we can actually manufacture from the Sun.

Here is the link for the Sun Altitude/Azimuth table he mentions http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/AltAz.php. I put London as 0 degrees, 5 minutes West, and 51 degrees 32 minutes North. With these calculations the sun will not be at an angle to encourage the manufacture of vitamin D in our bodies until April 20th, and then only between 11.40am and 12.20pm, if it is sunny! So, unfortunately, this lovely warm March weather won't actually increase our vitamin D stores. Contact me if you want to know about vitamin D testing and supplementation.
